Caraway Debut Performance @ Piranha Bar: June 2, 2016

Last night Riley and I dashed over to Piranha Bar after his evening summer class to catch his ex- (yet still on good terms) roommate Spencer and his band Caraway’s debut performance.

I didn’t know what to expect after the wide range of other bands demonstrated various styles, all of which were loud and slightly incomprehensible.

Sipping a couple beers, and dashing over for my first Five Guys burger experience between sets (a review all in its own), we finally made it to the moment we’d been waiting for: Caraway.

I was pleasantly surprised!

I’m a sucker for simply-plucked guitar melodies that not-so-slowly transition into tight-knit songs. That, is how I would best describe Caraway’s style, without giving too much of their magic away.

The vibe was very “Die in Your Arms” Crash Romeo (in a good way) and took me back to my sec 3 introductions to bands who frequented the pages of Alternative Press thanks to my best friend Hannah (and her well-beyond-her-years taste in music).

Caraway made the most of their 5-song set and graced all those who came to watch. The amount of practicing it must have taken to achieve that level of coordination amongst the four band members goes without saying.

Lead singer Jeff (and his new guitar) sang on key, a skill that other bands didn’t necessary accomplish… When guitarist Spencer joined in, their canon-like-lyric sections were meticulously crafted and sounded swell.

I was thoroughly and utterly impressed. Wishing that their songs could be blaring out of my speakers as I write this. Continuing…

The subtle interactions between Spencer and drummer/brother Mack, were endearing. As part of a big family myself, I’m often enchanted when watching family members working together to create something great.

Bass player Troy was blessed with a quick mid-show birthday celebration complete with cake and chorus of “Happy Birthday” from the crowd. Good thing too, since Caraway’s songs make you want to sing along. Naturally, I was on the edge of my toes until that point.

Overall, this band is one to look out for folks. I’m glad to have witnessed the public rendition of “the beginning” last night.

It was well worth the extra slug-in-my-step speed I supported this morning on my way to work.

Give the people more, Caraway.

Give the people more.
