Yesterday, we FINALLY introduced ourselves to the concept of SUP!
For those who are unfamiliar with the term, SUP stands for “Stand Up Paddleboarding” (I didn’t know what it meant initially either…).
We had planned to go in early June, but a thunderstorm forced us to push the activity to a later date.
Riley and I went in on a Groupon deal with two of my closest work friends: Marie-Claire and Mylene. The deal included a crash course and everything we needed for a SUP adventure.
After traveling up North of Montreal to St-Adolph d’Howard, we were pumped and ready to embark on this new challenge. Only Marie-Claire had a beginner level’s experience from past SUP excursions so the rest of us didn’t know what to expect.
It was AWESOME!
I was expecting it to be a lot harder than it was, mind you, it was still pretty tough on the muscles (and ego when you fall into the water).
Riley was first to take the plunge into the water, twice in a row I might add, and I followed shortly after. Neither of us witnessed each others falls, but our wet hair gave us away.
Random plunks into the water occurred as we all fell trying to adjust to the tips and tricks our instructor was giving us. I found the “sweet spot” a little early and was pretty decent at keeping my balance.
I’m extremely proud to say that I can count my falls on one hand (Riley… maybe both hands?), but overall it wasn’t too discouraging and it’s definitely something I would want to try again.
I looked into places in Montreal (maybe not willing to drive to St-Adolph again…) where you can rent the SUP equipment and go out on the water for an hour. The prices aren’t so bad, which is a good start!
Hannah informed me that prices are way better in Quebec, so maybe we can “test the waters” in more than one city.
SUP is definitely something I would recommend to anyone who likes a workout and isn’t afraid to get a little wet in the process. [Holla if ya love wataaaaa!]
Disclaimer: Your abs and legs are DEAD the next day… we can attest to that.
Now you know “what’s SUP”.
